Two weeks ago, the Argentine newspaper La Nación announced: “AMIA Bombing: unidentified DNA found amid human remains and is suspected that it could be the attacker´s.” Readers should be pardoned for believing that we are in 1994, the year in which the AMIA Jewish community center was bombed. That the local press would report as a scoop new evidence taken from the scene of a crime perpetrated last century is a telling commentary on the arbitrary evolution of the various investigations that emerged after that fateful July 18: on the Iranian involvement, on the Syrian track, and on the local connection. And also about the cover-up of the AMIA case, the infamous Memorandum of Understanding between Cristina Kirchner ´s Argentina and Iran, the Buenos Aires-Teheran complicity denounced by prosecutor Alberto Nisman, and the still un-clarified death of the prosecutor himself. In a kind of inverted Mamushka process, where each Russian doll produces an even bigger one, from the ruins of AMIA flourished new causes, mysterious clues, sloppy investigations, atrocious outcomes and surprising revelations.

Unlike other countries that suffered terrorist attacks after which the intellectual and material authors were quickly identified, for the last 23 years Argentina bore witness to multiple errors, plots and even scabrous situations. This mess turned bizarre when the terrorists were summoned by the victim-country to join the investigation, when the president of the republic was denounced for treason by the main prosecutor, and when he was found dead of a shot in the head just hours before he was going to offer testimony in Congress.

Nevertheless and in spite of so much political, judicial and police chaos, thanks to Alberto Nisman we know the essential. We know that it was the ayatollah regime who planned this atrocity. We know that it was the Islamist group Hezbollah who executed it. We know that President Cristina Kirchner and Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman, along with other government minions and unofficial figures, sought to exculpate the murderers with the spurious aim of being able to trade with them and to ally with them politically. That required crushing justice and truth, so they tried that. Things did not go exactly as the conspirators wished –truth prevailed. But there was no justice for the victims, either. True, INTERPOL- issued red alerts hang over the heads of important officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran. But the chances that the long arm of the Law will reach them are remote.

Today, the Jews of Argentina, with the support of much of society, will meet once again at the premises of the rebuilt AMIA building. As every July 18 for the last 23 years, we will honor the memory of the victims and demand justice. Almost a quarter of a century after the largest Islamist attack in Latin America took place, expectations are low. But our determination is high.

Dos semanas atrás, titulaba el diario argentino La Nación: “Atentado a la AMIA: hallan ADN sin identificar en restos humanos y sospechan que podría ser del atacante”. Los lectores deben ser disculpados por creer que estamos en 1994, año en que el centro comunitario judío AMIA fue bombardeado. Que la prensa local informe como primicia nueva evidencia tomada de la escena de un crimen perpetrado el siglo pasado es un comentario elocuente del devenir arbitrario de las varias investigaciones nacidas a posteriori de aquél fatídico 18 de julio: sobre la participación iraní, la pista siria y la conexión local. Y también sobre el encubrimiento de la causa AMIA, el infame Memorando de Entendimiento entre la Argentina de Cristina Kirchner e Irán, la denuncia de complicidad argentino-iraní del fiscal Alberto Nisman, y luego la muerte aún no esclarecida del propio fiscal. En una suerte de proceso Mamushka invertido, dónde cada muñeca rusa produce una aún más grande todavía, de las ruinas de la AMIA afloraron nuevas causas, pistas misteriosas, investigaciones de poco rigor, desenlaces atroces y revelaciones sorprendentes.

A diferencia de otros países que padecieron atentados terroristas tras los cuales rápidamente fueron identificados los autores intelectuales y materiales del caso, la Argentina de los últimos 23 años fue un testigo lastimoso de múltiples errores, ardides, desprolijidades e incluso de situaciones escabrosas. Este desorden culminó en lo insólito cuando los terroristas fueron convocados por el país-víctima a sumarse a la investigación, cuando la presidenta de la república fue denunciada por traición a la patria por el fiscal principal de la causa, y cuando éste fue hallado muerto de un tiro en la sien pocas horas antes de una audiencia de alto-voltaje en el Congreso de la Nación.

No obstante, a pesar de tanto caos político, judicial y policial, gracias a Alberto Nisman sabemos lo esencial. Sabemos que fue el régimen ayatolá quién planeó esta atrocidad. Sabemos que fue el movimiento integrista Hezbolá quien la ejecutó. Sabemos que la presidenta Cristina Kirchner y el canciller Héctor Timerman, junto a otros secuaces del gobierno y figurines extraoficiales, buscaron exculpar a los asesinos con el fin espurio de poder comerciar con ellos y aliarse políticamente a ellos. Lo cual requería aplastar a la justicia y la verdad, así es que lo intentaron. Las cosas no salieron exactamente como los conspiradores hubieran deseado; la verdad primó. Pero tampoco hubo justicia para las víctimas todavía. Cierto, circulares rojas de INTERPOL penden sobre las cabezas de importantes autoridades de la República Islámica de Irán. Pero las chances de que el peso de la ley caiga sobre ellas son remotas.

Hoy, los judíos de la Argentina, con el respaldo de buena parte de la sociedad, nos reuniremos una vez más frente al edificio reconstruido de la AMIA. Como cada 18 de julio por los últimos 23 años, honraremos la memoria de las víctimas y pediremos justicia. Casi un cuarto de siglo después del más grande atentado islamista en América Latina, las expectativas son bajas. Pero nuestra determinación permanece alta.
